10  Sentence Describing Idea (149:150 characters)

Revolutionize ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE email systems by allowing  ONLY mail that’s acceptable to the box owner to enter and to leave the box and domain.

11 Describe Idea in Depth  (297:300 words)

Box owner specifies a “Preference Set” of acceptability criteria that’s used in filtering and processing the mailbox’s traffic. Utilizing client-system “Window Clerk” software, the Set is defined and uploaded via FTP or other protocol to the mail server.

A server-resident OSI Level 6 “Mail Clerk” plug-in process interfaces with domain’s Mail Transfer Agent(s) or functional analog(s).

When a completely assembled email is available for delivery to and for transmission from the mailbox, Mail Clerk uses the email’s envelope TO: or FROM field to determine the relevant mailbox.  Set criteria are accessed and applied to direct processing.  If no Set is found, Mail Clerk allows normal mail processing.

User’s Set criteria may include KNOWN domain-foreign mailbox URLs with which two-way traffic is always acceptable and/or WANTED character strings whose presence in traffic text – envelope SUBJECT or other body text field or file – makes mail acceptable for delivery. User may also specify supplemental or alternate traffic processing depending on traffic content and movement direction.

A domain owner’s System Administrator “SysAdmin” can classify a mailbox as PUBLIC so that two-way traffic in always acceptable.

SysAdmin may specify KNOWNSA (content similar to KNOWN) and/or WANTEDSA (content similar to WANTED) filtering criteria which will be applied to both incoming and outgoing traffic; and,  take precedence over user’s criteria.

SysAdmins may be assigned to control the mailbox by including their UserNames as Set criteria. Such can send to and receive from the mailbox without filtering.

Mail Clerk applies Set criteria to content of envelope’s TO:- FROM:- and SUBJECT:-fields, traffic’s body and text attachments’ content. Traffic whose content exactly satisfies any criteria will be processed as defined by Set.  Otherwise, the traffic is discarded or filed or forwarded.

For audit purposes, Mail Clerk maintains mailbox and domain transaction logs that are Window-Clerk-downloadable for inspection.

12.  Problem Addressed (14 8:150 words)

All global community participants – email users, SysAdmins domain owners - are affected by abusive, illegal, malicious and unauthorized emailers.

Address harvesting, mailing lists, spyware, malware and phishing provide URLs for emailing. Virus testing and domain-global criteria eliminate some unwanted traffic.  However, the vast majority is delivered to the mailbox addressed.

The user must sort out unwanted traffic while risking that undetected spyware, malware and viruses may be embedded and activated during sorting. Both domain mail server and user’s client system are at risk.

There is virtually no control of Internet-outgoing email whose content and/or addressee may be contrary to the welfare and interests of a user or a domain owner.

This mechanism restricts incoming and outgoing mailbox traffic to foreign and local emailers meeting criteria established by mailbox users, SysAdmins and domain owners.

Properly implemented, EPA’S OPERATIONS ARE TRANSPARENT TO ALL MAIL SERVERS, MTA’S AND MAIL CLIENT SYSTEMS.
