Classification is accomplished by comparing criteria with the content of appropriate fields in e-mail traffic.
Comparison of criteria described by character strings are compared with the mail envelope's SUBJECT: field and, as defined by the licensee, other text fields and and text files which are included in the mail. Comparison is, at the user's option' case-sensitive (i.e. 'Xerox' doesn't match 'xerox') or case-insensitive (i.e. 'Xerox' does match 'xerox')..
Criteria described by whole or partial URLs are compared to the mail envelope's TO: and FROM: fields. Comparison is case-insensitive.
Exactly matching field content to criteria causes the mail is classified as "wanted". Otherwise, the mail is classified as 'unwanted". Post-classification processing of both categories of traffic is defined by the Preference Set.
Only one (the first) criteria match results in the "wanted" classification. Failure to match at least one criteria results in the "unwanted" classification.
The absence of criteria in a Category has no effect on the mail's classification.
The absence of a Category from a Preference Set has no effect on the mail's classification.
The absence of all criteria from a Preference Set causes all mail to be classified "unwanted".
The absence of all Categories from a Preference Set causes all mail to be classified "unwantedf"
The absence of a Preference Set for a mailbox exempts the mail from EPA management.
