EPAmail Detailed Guide

EPAmail Service is a 'filter-and-forward' e-mail service that provides a 'proof-of-concept' demonstration by implementing a subset of the EPA process functionality. There are significant differences between the EPAmail Service and the full EPA process

The EPAmail Mail Clerk software process operates in a UNIX® environment as a 'plugged-in' mail filtering ('miltering') extension of 'sendmail' (8.12).

The EPAmail Window Clerk software process operates in a Windows® environment.

The EPAmail Window Clerk software provides the owner with the required functions and facilities to communicate their preferences to the Mail Clerk and to audit/download the Mail Operations Records of your mailbox.

When the mailbox owner uploads a Preferences Set to the Mail Room, the previous set - if any - is placed in the Preferences Set History archive. The uploaded Preferences Set is then used to classify and process all mail that subsequently arrives.

As e-mail addressed to the mailbox arrives at the mail server from the Internet, the Mail Clerk uses the associated Preferences Set to classify the mail as 'wanted' or 'unwanted'.

If an e-mail is classified as 'wanted', it will be forwarded to the mailbox specified by the mailbox owner. Otherwise, the e-mail will be 'burned', 'rejected' or 'forwarded' as specified in the Preferences Set.

In the 'SUBJECT:' field content of every forwarded e-mail, the Mail Clerk inserts one of the following EPA Classification Stamps:
   |EPA+1| ..... if the e-mail's 'FROM:' matches a Private preference
   |EPA+2| ..... if the e-mail's 'TO:' matches a Public preference
   |EPA+3| ..... if the e-mail's 'SUBJECT:' includes a Wanted preference
   |EPA--| ...... if the e-mail is unwanted

The Mail Clerk then creates an entry in the box's Mail Traffic Log to record the e-mail's arrival. classification, and disposition.
